The Business of Being an Author - 4 Week Online Course Beginning Tuesday 3rd of Feb 2026
Writing a book is hard, but making a career out of being an author is harder. Join Dawn Geddes, a freelance book journalist, public relations specialist and digital marketer, on this four-week course which explores ways in which authors can raise their profile, effectively market their work and gain publicity in the press and online. This practical course is for writers of all levels, who are looking to build an author brand and give their writing career a push.
The course will take place online over the course of four Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm, starting on Tuesday the 3rd of February. All sessions will be recorded for those who can’t join in live.
The course will cover:
How to develop a marketing and publicity strategy
How to build and establish an ‘author brand’
Social media, newsletters and other online opportunities
Pitching yourself to podcasts and book festivals
Writing a press release and pitching to newspapers and magazines
Other ways of marketing your work.

Dawn Geddes is the founder of Book Smart, a publicity agency which arms writers with the tools they need to build a brand and promote their work.
For the last decade, Dawn has been working as a freelance journalist, specialising in literature. Her work has appeared in publications such as Mslexia, Living, Scottish Field, The People’s Friend, My Weekly, MADE, Platinum and the Daily Record. She contributes to the Scots Magazine monthly as their Book Correspondent.
Like many journalists, her background is in PR. She has developed a specialism for working with creatives such as photographers, musicians, jewellery makers and artists, but her real passion lies in the literature sector. Her clients include bestselling authors and much loved literary festivals, including Islay Book Festival and Bloody Scotland, where she works as their Digital Manager.
